The tour to Sukhothai takes a full day, leaving early in the morning and not returning until late at night, BUT it is definitely worth the effort. Sukhothai is a former capital of Thailand (before Ayudthaya and Bangkok), but was ransacked by Burmese invaders many years ago. What is left is Thailand's answer to Angkor Wat, with truly spectacular remains, some of which are still in great condition. This trip will give you a real feel for the ancient kingdom of Thailand.
This trip also takes in another famous kingdom on route to Sukhothai, the kingdom of Sri Satchanalai, but the highlight of the trip is the historical park at Sukhothai. The Sukhothai kingdom was around from 1238 until 1438, and enjoyed a great age of prosperity - the splendour of the former palaces and temples is still evident today. During the 13th century, King Ramkhamhaeng developed the Thai alphabet in Sukhothai.
