Over the past decade or so, Chiang Mai has grown its reputation as a high quality golfing destination. With 11 excellent quality golf courses all within an hours travel from the city, it is no surprise that during the high season golfers flock to Chiang Mai from China, Korea and Singapore, amongst others.
Use this comprehensive guide to explore all the courses. Find out how to get to each of the courses, browse photos and read hole by hole guides for all of the most challenging and interesting holes Chiang Mai has to offer.
Chiang Mai’s Best Golf Courses
Highlands Golf Course
Since 2006, Highlands has been one of the premier golf resorts in Chiang Mai. 18 challenging holes that are always in perfect condition.
Alpine Golf Course
Since it reopened in 2008, the Alpine course has replaced the former Chiang Mai Lamphun golf course. Many of the holes were redesigned, extending the course, including adding the island green par 3. The course is located in it’s own valley to the east of the city and is always well maintained.
Green Valley Golf Course
Green Valley Golf Course is one of Chiang Mai’s best established courses. Featuring 18 holes that weave their way through a luxury village north of the city, near Maerim. The course is particularly popular with its members, but welcomes visitors. The spotlights allow the course to open for night golf into the evenings.
Maejo Golf Course
Maejo is one of my favourite courses, a great design with some challenging holes as it meanders through some beautiful orchards. Miss the fairway and you’ll be amongst the lamyai, mangos and oranges.
Royal Golf Course
Royal Golf Course is like your own private country club with some excellent tight holes and a fun layout.
Gassan Khuntan Golf Course
Khuntan is the premier of the 3 Gassan Courses. Located in the Khuntan valley south of Lamphun the course has some challenging holes with some particularly interesting par 3s.
Gassan Lake City
Much closer to town, the Lake City golf course features, well lakes! Many shots here need a good carry from your tee shot to avoid losing a ball to the water hazards. Formerly rice fields, the course is flat.
Gassan Marina Golf Course
The third Gassan Course features long straight holes, ideal for a big hitter who likes to hit it long, but as the back nine mirrors the front nine, some of the holes can become repetitive.
Doi Inthanon Golf Course
The Doi Inthanon Golf Course is a newer course some 50km south of the city close to Thailand’s highest mountain. The course has an excellent, fun design, with the final 3 holes being some of the best around.
Gold Canyon Golf Course
The Gold Canyon Golf Course is one of Chiang Mai’s newest golf courses, located just south of Lamphun town. The journey to the course is well worth it, with an interesting set of 18 holes currently open, with a further 9 due to open in 2015.
Lanna Golf Course
Close to the city, the Lanna Golf Course is popular among the locals as their country club with full facilities. Some interesting holes, with plenty of small slightly elevated greens that can be tough to hit.
9 Hole Courses
As well as the 18 hole courses, Chiang Mai has several warm up courses with just 9 holes
Sand Creek Golf Course
The course was abandoned by the owners and is now run and maintained by the caddies. Ideal for players on a budget and for those wanting to practice their accuracy on small tight fairways.
Star Dome Golf Course
Star Dome is located right in the city, between the airport and the moat. With lights, it is popular as a night golf course.
Mezzanine Golf Course
Mezzanine is a new golf course, which currently only has 9 holes open, along with driving range and practice facilities. The course is undergoing a redesign and expansion though, with 18 holes due to open soon.
Mae Moh Golf Course
Around an hour and a half away from Chiang Mai, in Lampang, is the excellent Mae Moh Golf Course. Built overlooking the lignite mines, the course has some excellent views and is good value.
Locations of the Courses
You can find directions and maps of each of the courses on their pages, but here is a map of all the courses.
