Chiang Mai By Train

Chiang Mai Train Station is located just to the east of the city center – an easy 10 minute tuk tuk ride to and from the city. Thapae Road is one of the main roads in Chiang Mai leading east from Thapae Gate, one of Chiang Mai Old City’s key gates. While traffic is one way for part of it, the train station is to the east of the river.
While there are proposals to improve the rail network in Thailand, currently Chiang Mai is the terminus of the main northern line running from Bangkok’s Hua Lampong Train Station. Journeys can take in the region of 12 hours from the capital to Chiang Mai, so our advice is to take an overnight train. With bunk bed sleeping accommodation and a restaurant / bar carriage, budget travellers can save by taking the train – alternatively enjoy Thailand’s countryside by travelling through the day.
